The Show of Feast of Famine #36 Khans and Dragons

This episode totally wasn't recorded two ish weeks ago and sat sadly edited and ready just unloaded on my computer. Well we are actually posting it now and we're looking at some of the awesome stuff, namely the big sweet cycles in Fate Reforged. Specifically we are talking about the "Proto-khans" as The Mana Pool dubbed them, the Dragon brood mothers, the Sieges, and anything else we stumbled upon. Oh and of course Ugin.

We opened off with a fairly significant discussion about the design of Ugin, his card, his abilities, and of course his freaking beautiful art. Following that we also compared Ugin and his sort of evil twin, Nicol Bolas Planeswalker. So enjoy y'all.

The Show of Feast and Famine #35 The Mathias Kollros Episode

In this, our first live podcast and our first Artist specific episode we decided to focus on one of our all time favorite artists, Mathias Kollros. He has not been doing magic art for a huge amount of time but he's done some very impressive work and has a beautiful way with manipulating Light and Shadow.

The Show of Feast and Famine #34 Cursed Robot Voice!

Don't worry you won't really hear the Robot Voice, but it caused us to lose almost and hour and a half of audio, yeah this was going to be a long episode. We still managed to talk about some of our favorite cards , mostly in green and a little bit in the multicolored and artifact areas. Well theres really only so much I can tell you about without ruining the few things we did talk to, but basically we talked about Khans of Tarkir.

You can see the full spoiler here: http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?output=spoiler&method=visual&set=%5b%22Khans+of+Tarkir%22%5d&sort=cn+

The Show of Feast and Famine #33 Literally Screaming Lightning

Uhg sorry we've been having some crap here, and we go over most of it in the first 20 minutes or so. We're looking to set up a regular recording date and time since right now its pretty much when we are both at home and remember we need to record, obviously not the best strategy. Some of us are also suffering from some stupid mental tom foolery, the kind where your brain hates itself, so setting up some more structure will hopefully help.

But hey enough being a downer, we did an episode. Today we are discussing Khans of Tarkir. We really like a lot of the cards, both just as cards and because the art and flavor of some of these are absolutely amazing. We looked over the full art for the Ascendancy cycle, each one is designed to be a snapshot of each clan and we go running with them. We probably spent the most amount of time on the art for the Abzan Houses, the WBG wedge, and the Sultai Brood, the UBG wedge. We also had a brief description of how the wedges are going to affect the different clans. The best comparison is to the shard from Alara, the primary color gives you the foundation for the culture, but in a wedge culture they usually draw very heavily on the reasons the primary color has to hate it's enemies. The best example is probably the Abzan Houses, their base color is Black with its enemies White and Green. Despite one of Black's primary focuses being greed and self advance the Abzan are very similar to Selesnya in that they seek groups and even have a card saying their greatest fear is to be alone.

Well besides those we also go over all the cards that had been spoiled as of Tuesday afternoon, so mostly the stuff from PAX. Hope you Enjoy.

Oh and of course you can find the album we went over right here

The Show of Feast and Famine #32 Comic Con

Ah the weirdness of Comic Con. Neither of us particularly wanted to be there but through the magic of the internet we can get all the magic stuff that has spawned from the Con. So before we get into our main topic we talked about the four cards spoiled at the Magic panel, the two for the 2014 commander product and the two for Speed vs Cunning, one of whom is one of the five khans of tarkir.

But once we’re done with that we return to a topic we left dormant for a while, our comparisons of the guilds, old and new and our overview of how they fit into their color combinations and the art styles that each guild is supposed to follow. We had a heck of a time doing this one on the dimir, which stephanie researched way back and we kept forgetting/delaying.

So without further ado, the link dump.

Show of Feast and Famine #31 ZOMG Slivers!

Last one I swear, this is the last time that we do an episode completely focused on m15, seriously. Well we went over all the brand new slivers, including the new monstrosity. We discussed all of the paragons, the new cycle of uncommon same color lords. We also remembered to point out the important things we missed about the other new Ajani.

We discovered some cards that may or not belong in Kans of Tarkir but we'll see. Also we couldn't get the image gallery or gatherer to work so we looked over everything at the wonderful Mythic Spoiler site.

Show of Feast and Famine #30 I Want to Buy this Core Set

Today we mostly focused, ok entirely focused on the M15 cards we’ve had spoiled for us. We specifically went over every one of the guest designer cards, looking at the reasoning behind the flavor of each card, the brilliant and well aquated art on some, and the parallels between the guest designer's work and the card they produced. We also looked at all six of the Souls and every other card that had been made known to us by the time of recording.

The Show of Feast and Famine #29 A Quick Conspiracy

We're mostly looking over the full spoiler for Conspiracy, and while we tried to focus on new cards, or at least once's we had not personally seen before, other things did catch our eyes. We also got hooked on some of the beatiful art used in Conspiracy, namely we really got running on some wonderful Terese Nielsen Art, along with the art for Flamewright by relatively new artist Mathias Kollros.

In case you haven't seen yet make sure to go check out the full spoiler.

We did also accidentally stumble on the new gatherer look that was officially released on the 17th, but we recorded this midday on the 16th, it seems i was even trying to get to the site while it was offline because for the first chunk of the show I couldn't get to Gatherer.

The Show of Feast and Famine #28 Conspiracy of Tarkir

Some how with only two pictures from Tarkir, a video of Maro and Rich Hagon, and a couple dozen spoiled cards from Conspiracy we managed to take nearly two hours. I think we Should be semi impressed.

Firstly we looked over and analyzed the two pieces of art we have for Khans of Tarkir. Firstly we have a fairly sweeping landscape covered in warriors of at least two different humanoid species with a large dragon in the background, seemingly made out of the mountain itself. We have a small debate about whether this is truly a dragon, seeing as we know they are all extinct on Tarkir. We also looked over the new Sarkan art, and we both love that he seems to be recovering from having his mind shattered, and I do love that you can tell that this isn't an Ajani Vengant sort of thing - Where we see a character at an earlier time - because he has a piece of a hedron hanging from his awesome new spear. For more Info and the video interveiw between Mark Rosewater and Rich Hagon, follow the link below.

http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/1496

On to Conspiracy, we went over every card that WoTC has spoiled on their site, I get the feeling that they're keeping stuff back so that drafting this is actually a massive surprise. Well I don't want to spoil too much, but we covered all the mechanics rather briefly before we jumped into the spoilers, and we referred to the LRR/bionic Trousers video where 8 semi well known folks from the community, and football, all as down to try and draft and play this weird, amazing set.

Fair warning that their are cards in the video which have not been "Officially spoiled" so we may not have covered them.

You can find the spoilers Here

The Show of Feast and Famine #25 Gods and Demon Mics

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=373717

Heliod: Self styled leader of the gods. He represents law, order, justice, retribution, the bonds between people, and of course the sun. He represents what most would consider the foundations of a civilization.

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=373524

Spear of Heliod: Khrusor, the Sun Spear, legends say it was once used to wipe out all traces of a forgotten fourth polis.

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=373717

Personality: He is prideful and thinks himself better than his fellow gods and the mortals who have accidentally created him. While he represents the ties that bind his loyalties are fickle and can be fleeting.

Gods he represents? Zeus, any others?

Thasa: God of the seas, all the creatures of the sea, and the oceans secrets as well as knowledge, gradual change, murmurs, voyages, patterns, and searching.

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=373535

Bident of Thasa: Dekella, the spear allows thasa to control the flow of the seas, specifically by creating two massive whirlpools.

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=373544

Personality: Thasa is a god obsessed with altering the status quo, but also the least accepting of rapid change. she works to exact slow and permanent change on the world. She and her worshipers tend to focus heavily on the future, often speaking only in it.

Gods she represents? Poseidon but less likely to make snap judgments. others?

Erebos: A god who was created by the birth of Helliod, when the light first shone the first shadow was cast. Heliod feared it and banished it to the underworld where it became Erebos, the shadow of the sun, a god of the accepted fate. He is the keeper of the dead and the underworld, the patron god of the rich, or those who seek money as gold and jewels are common in his domain and are worthless to him. to a lesser extent he also is the patron of those who suffer, or are envious, and have accepted their fates or wish to be able to.

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=373589

Whip of Ereboss: Mastix, a golden handled whip of infinite length, as thin as a shadow, used sometimes to inflict pain but more often used to drag reluctant dead into the underworld, or back to the underworld.

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=373709

Personality: Erebos is not truly capable of positive emotions. He derives a kind of satisfaction from the suffering of the living, but not glee, he feels them embracing him and his personal suffering. He is a compassionate god, at least as far as he can manage, he has accepted his duty in existence so he requires his ward do the same, if his charges don’t try to escape the underworld then he never makes them suffer.

Gods he represents? A more traditional version of Hades, others?

Purphoros: god of the forge, fires, and the restless earth. He is god of physical heat and emotional heat. He is the manifestation of the raw creative power of sentient beings. Because of this he is the god or artists and artisans, giving him an innate chaos and duality between creation and destruction.

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=373556

Hammer of Purphoros: Akmon, a great bronze hammer capable of turning mountains to molten stone in a single strike, a hammer whose sparks are each a new enchantment, some which may even take life of their own.

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=373587

Personality: He is driven primarily by his drive to create the unseen and the unknown. Once he has created something it is no longer new and he destroys it and begins his creation again. He does not follow rules save for those he creates for himself. He is frustrated by his artificial limits he does not understand, he seeks to go beyond his imagination but he is bound by the imaginations and minds of the therans who brought him into existence and maintain him.

Gods he represents? Similar to Hephaestus, but only in some themes, he is not any where near as calm and controlled as Hephaestus.

Nylea: God of the hunt, seasons, and natural places. because of her primary domains she is also considered the god of predation, hunger, growth, change, and rebirth. Her grove is a sacred place where sentient mortals are not often given the right to tread.

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=373559

Bow of Nylea: Ephixis is a short bow that Nylea wields as the greatest hunter of the plane. Her nymph companion Theopila, conjures illusions of fireflies and silk worms for nylea to use as target practice. Although Nylea is the god of the hunt she abhors hunting for sport

http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=373603

Personality: Nylea is an overtly calm god, primarily concerned with the welfare of her forest and the animals that reside in it. she prevents the expansion of humans into her realm and if angered will change or delay the flow of seasons. She is allied with purphuros and allows him to unleash fires to help the forest grow in the best ways possible and burn out human incursions. She however is often opposed by Karametra who sees her meddling with the seasons as a constant annoyance while Nylea is disgusted by agriculture which she sees as an abomination of the natural cycle.

The Show of Feast and Famine #24 What to do With All These Tokens?

So in this week's episode, yes I know the last one was in February, we do our usual crack a pack, with a pack of Nemesis this time. The mighty Orixid did manage to nearly beet out such fierce competitors at the Spineless Thug and the Ancient Hydra. Needless to say it was a bit of a one sided Flavor Battle. We did also have the aid of Kyle and My's good Friend Aaron, as he joined us for a fairly impromptu episode and game of completely fake format. The actual source for this horrible format being the Wonderful folks at Loading Ready Run who recently posted a new episode of Friday Nights.

I watched the new episode and immediately texted them both saying we had to play it now. For those of you familiar with the Friday Nights videos, i promise we will not try to play Prancy Pants, or at least we'll do our best, Kyle and I are by no means good at this game.

If you want to see the real video check it out here  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOZxhPUjws4&index=22&list=PL3rP64NRtmbjJFGumln1bvmYHaqhxYvlt

The Show of Feast and Famine #23 Definetly not Born of the Gods

Welcome back to what will hopefully be a renewed commitment to podcasting, yes I know I say that every time we return for spoiler season. Joining me today is our likely permanent Co-host, Kyle Mares, another friend of mine in Denver, he is less flavor oriented than Steph and I but he has a good, and optimistic view of a lot of cards. We just went over the Born of the Gods Spoilers today, well just save for our intro, This will also hopefully be a regular segment, we did a crack a pack and had a goofy flavor battle between all of the creatures we got. So if we keep going please keep joining us.

So we're back for our second to last spoiler episode until Born of the Gods. In this we cover the lands, artifacts, multicolored, green, red, and black cards that were reveled since last episode, so basically all of them. we get a it flavor crazy with some of them but hey that is what we do.

Show of Feast and Famine #20 Poleis and Monsters

Welcome back for another insightful and flavor filled episode of the show of feast and famine. we are here to over analyze a few things today. First and Foremost, the nice shiny new Planeswalkers guide to Theros, which covers in depth the three poleis, he have a favorite, I think you can guess which one. Next we very very briefly reflect on the trailer and then we hit the thing that everyone is doing, albeit with our own flavor centric twist, we start looking at cards spoiled from PAX!

Show of Feast and Famine #19 It's Not Really 18

A bit late this week but we did not miss the week so we’re still going strong, just school starting and many job working caused us a bit of confusion. But we managed to record and it was a good week for us. We had a Planeswalker’s Guide to Theros, those things that are basically made for us, then we had the reveal of the cards in Duel Decks Monsters VS Heros. Show of Feast and Famine #18 Hey, We're 20 Too!!

Nice single topic episode today. We’re mostly just looking at From the Vault 20 for the flavor of the cards in a vacuum. We did our best too look at card art, new and old, and compare them if there was previous art. We are also dissecting flavor text and doing our best to understand what artists we told to make and how R&D wanted these cards explained through their art. We mostly used this article for our references if anyone doesn’t know what is in From the Vault 20, silly person.

Shadowborn Apostle

**I want to make a deck purely out of these, and relentless rats. And maybe a handful of demons.

Shadowborn Demon

Bogbrew Witch

Festering Newt

(newts irl are aquatic/semi-aquatic; salamanders (also amphibious in the real world) in mythos are noted to have an affinity with fire (makes me think red).Festering newt is black, and sounds like it would live in a swamp

Historic descriptions of salamanders:

Descriptions of the legendary form are more likely to use stylized depictions. In Medieval European bestiaries, fanciful depictions of salamanders include "a satyr-like creature in a circular wooden tub" (8th century), "a worm penetrating flames" (12th century), "a winged dog" (13th century), and "a small bird in flames" (13th century)

Connection to fire:
This connection probably originates from a behavior common to many species of salamander: hibernating in and under rotting logs. When wood was brought indoors and put on the fire, the creatures "mysteriously" appeared from the flames.

Salamanders, dragons, and basilisks were all labeled “crawling things”

Bubbling Cauldron

word cauldron comes from a long mess of etymology, but at the end of that trail is some latin meaning “hot bath”

Billy S’s Macbeth helped found cliche of cauldrons use in witchcraft

*in Irish folklore, purported that leprechauns keep their gold/treasure in cauldrons

“In some forms of Wicca, incorporating aspects of Celtic mythology, the cauldron is associated with the goddessCerridwen. Celtic legend also tells of cauldrons that was useful to warring armies: dead warriors could be put into a cauldron and then be returned to life, save that they lacked the power of speech. It was suspected that they lacked souls. These warriors could go back into battle until they were killed again. In Wicca and some other forms of neopagan or pagan belief systems the cauldron is still used in magical practices. Most often a cauldron is made of cast iron and is used to burn loose incense on a charcoal disc, to make black salt (used in banishing rituals), for mixing herbs, or to burn petitions (paper with words of power or wishes written on them). Cauldrons symbolize not only the Goddess but also represent the womb (due to the fact that it holds something) and on an altar it represents earth because it is a working tool.”
